Racial justice training, Global Justice Now

To support local activists to develop their knowledge and confidence with current concepts and language in racial justice, Global Justice Now invited us to run a full-day workshop in Sheffield.

Recognising that this group all share a long-standing commitment to the movement for global justice, the focus for this work was less on convincing them of the presence of racism, and more about:

  • updating the collective understanding of racial justice principles and frameworks

  • looking at the covert ways that racism can play out, even in activist spaces

  • exploring and committing to action to tackle racial exclusion, injustice and inequality in the activist community.

We used somatic approaches to support an embodied sense of non-judgement, solidarity and courage, so activists could build their own capacity for interrogating how colonial and white supremacist ideals might be may inadvertently taking root in their spaces.

Testimony:

“Both presenters gave me more confidence in both "imagining myself" in the perspectives/experience of a person of a different race, and also in "self soothing" when my own tension or "otherness" is affecting my wellbeing or behaviours negatively.”

“Excellent delivery. Presented challenging ideas without making participants feel uncomfortable / criticised.”

“I appreciated the focus on inner feeling”
